But do you see the difference between types of animation? Of course you do, but it is not just the difference of 2D & 3D. There are many categories among which the art animation is divided. Various methods of animation include Traditional Animation, 2D & 3D Animation, Motion Graphics, Stop Motion.

This type of animation is sometimes also referred as ‘cel animation’ & ‘hand drawn animation’. It was used for most of the animation films in the 20th century. This type of animation is very different from the traditional way of animating. 3D animation is created digitally by the animator on a computer. The environment is much more realistic, thus a very popular medium of the modern animation world. 3D animators also specialize in particular categories, for instance some would be very skilled in creating a character. And there will be other animators who specialize in facial movements. They would only work on the facial expressions and speech of the character.
3D animation makes the characters, environment, scenes, very realistic. Your favorite films like Avatar, Transformers, Despicable Me, would not have been this awesome if you remove 3D.
It has become commonly accepted, standard visual style for gaming industry, as it let the user do much more in comparison to a 2D game.
Before movies start in a theatre a bunch of visuals you see are basically motion graphics. Animated Logos, explainer videos, app introductions, etc are all examples of motion graphics. It can be distinguished with generic animation as it is not character driven or based on a story board.
Going into the history of motion graphics before the computer animation, it was a very costly affair. Stop motion is simply when various object are photographed in a different sequence creating the illusion of movement. There is absolutely no place for error in this type of animation. However the traditional stop motion is usually less expensive but time-consuming in nature. Stop motion is further divided in different categories usually named after type of medium used for creating the animation. Some examples are Claymation, Puppets, Cut-Out, Silhouette, Action figures, Pixelation.
