Five Reasons Why Storyboarding Is Important Before You Start Your Project
We often tell our clients that all we need is a one line brief and we will come up with an end product.
The confidence with which we commit this to our clients has substance to it, and that’s our process. And after you have the idea first thing that you need to do is creating a storyboard. It is very important, for the fact that it is an insight into the end product.
It is graphical representation of our video, how it will unfold shot by shot. It also includes important notes related to each shot. It is the foremost step after your script is ready, it is in fact the first step towards turning the script into animation. But there are people who often ignore this crucial step of animation process! Only almighty can tell the reason behind it as it is so very important for every single time you are working on a project. It benefits you not in one but in various ways.
We have listed out few reasons on why story boarding is so important:-
Clarity on Concept
Turning an idea or a full script into an animation is not an easy job. There are loads of things that require clarity. As at times the technical possibilities of an idea comes out during the story boarding. With the story board you bring life to what some time ago was just textual script. It gives you further clarity on how each shot would change into a complete animation.
And during the complete pre-production & production stage storyboard acts as a step by step guide. Animators refer to it time to time while working on the project.
All the professionals who work for clients always get the storyboard ready before they start working on a project. Well that’s why we call them professionals. Working for a client who has no animation background, a storyboard is a very helpful step. It helps you & the client to remain on the same page.
As making changes to the ready animation video would neither be easy nor be cost effective.
Thus providing this clarity to a client makes it easy for them to understand the outlook of the future end product.
Apart from providing you clarity on the project it also helps you having a vision for your projects. You not only make the sketches of the scenes of your project. But also you can decide the kinds of media required for your video. A story boarder would visualize the complete animation. And on the basis of that he will decide the kind of background music, sound effects, would be required. It is indeed blueprint of your project. It is at this stage when you can decide what all portions of the animation can be done in-house, and what you can farm out from an outsourcing animation studio.
Before you even start working on your storyboard you complete your script. But storyboard being the first outlook of your final product it has all the capabilities to refine or improve your script. At times the story board would look in such a way that you would want to mold the script accordingly.
Though there are no wholesale changes made during this stage, as scripting itself is a self-sufficient procedure. But any major changes after the animation can be very costly, that’s why many deleted scenes are not featured in your favorite animated films.
Another benefit and one of the major roles of a story board is that it can help you identify resources. It gives you a window to allocate the right resources required and time you will need to complete the final product. You would be able to assign the right task to the right person, and will easily figure out the right approach towards starting your animation. You will have the controls in your hands and assign projects to your team accordingly. Any great idea will always remain just an idea if you don’t know how to execute it properly.
There’s no shortcut to success, and those who believe making a story board is a waste of time they need to think again. Not just animation videos, whatever project you are doing, for instance film making, advertising shoot, documentary films, everything requires a right approach, and story boarding is that right approach. With all the points above it is clear that story boarding is of utmost importance and it reduces production risks in many ways.
